Primarily, we want to improve the offline experience for a large number of Wikipedia users, especially new readers who often have spotty internet access and wish to save data usage. Provide the means for those without reliable sources of internet to use Wikipedia. This feature might be the same as the previous "wikilater" project, or not.
WIKI OFFLINE ANDROID
On the app side, after research was conducted using a prototype built into the Wikipedia Android app, an initial "sideloading-only" version was released to production in February 2018. In response to New Readers research showing the need for better offline support, as well as a well-received Community Wishlist proposal, the Wikipedia Readers team is working on improving the offline user experience by adding support for loading Wikipedia articles from ZIM files. In the meantime, existing users can continue to read Wikipedia using the Kiwix app Summary Due to ongoing unresolved questions, further development of this feature has been paused, with more information available on the Phabricator task T195518. By enabling Offline Library from the app's settings, Wikipedia ZIM files detected on the device could be accessed by the app, thus allowing articles from these files to be searched and loaded instead when the user was offline. NOTE: Android test "Offline Library" paused as of June 2018įrom February to May 2018, the Offline Library was released as an "Easter egg' feature in the Wikipedia Android app.
